TMJ (TEMPOROMANDIBULAR) JOINT DYSFUNCTION

TMJ Dysfunction is a condition where the relationship between the upper and lower jaw has been altered. When this relationship is altered, the muscles of mastication (chewing muscles) go into spasm. The resulting stresses may radiate throughout the head, neck, and even involve the back. The pain may be constant or intermittent, lasting minutes, hours, days, or even years. Many patients describe the pain as a migraine headache. Eventually, a patient may demonstrate clicking, grating, snapping, or popping sounds in the joint.

TREATMENT

bulletCoronoplasty or occlusal equilibration (reshaping teeth to remove interference that cause abnormal jaw displacement).
bulletA splint appliance may be recommended in instances where there is overclosure.
bulletMyofunctional Therapy (muscle exercises that balance forces on teeth to prevent further movement) may be recommended.
bulletPhysiotherapy may be advised to aid in the coordination of the muscles of the jaw with other muscles of the head and neck.
bulletArthrograms (an x-ray of the joint that aids in the diagnosis in more severe disc displacements in the temporomandibular joint) may be necessary if correct function cannot be restored to the temporomandibular joint by conservative means.
bulletSurgery may be recommended when irreversible damage has occurred to the joint.
